Away back in 1803 the Whipmen of Linton formed themselves in to a benevolent society “for the bettering of themselves and their children” as the proclamation has it.

The atmosphere on “that gladsome night” has not changed. The neighbouring parishes of Newland, Kirkurd, Carlops and Dolphinton also take part, and as the hour of 6:30 approaches on Friday 5th June 2009, all roads lead in to the village green.
